How do I insert conversion tracking code?

Filed in Advanced Customisation

Note that advanced customisation support articles are provided as a courtesy to Aarcade and Big Cartel users. Aarcade does not provide support for advanced customisation. Please read the following related articles:

Using Google Analytics

We recommend the use of Google Analytics – which can be activated easily via your Big Cartel site settings – as it is free to use and provides extensive statistics including conversion data. To use Google Analytics with your Big Cartel shop, refer to How do I track statistics and conversions for my shop?

Inserting third party or custom tracking code

Aarcade does not provide support (beyond the following information) for using third party tracking code, so please contact the provider of your code for additional instructions and assistance.

If you have third party or custom tracking code you can insert it into your layout by following the support article How do I insert code into my Big Cartel theme layout? We strongly recommend using the x ic close body code option for tracking code (unless your code specifically needs to be entered in the head).

Note that this article also includes instructions for inserting code on specific pages, so if your tracking code is to be included only on your Success page you can use this method. For example:

{% if page.name == 'Success' %}
<script type="text/javascript">

..My Tracking Code..

</script>
{% endif %}

This method will not work for the Checkout page as explained below.

The Success page

Because your shop Success page is not securely hosted, at the end of the PayPal checkout process some customers might receive an alert from their browser such as “you are leaving a secure area, do you wish to proceed”. Customers may abandon the process at this stage and so, for this reason, it can not be guaranteed that 100% of customers will return to your Success page. Additionally, if your code requires access to order information, this data is not available via your Big Cartel Success page.

You can create a new Success page – see Creating a new Success page below – to work around these issues.

The Checkout page

Note that your Checkout theme page does not use your shop layout and is therefore isolated from the inert content method. If you wish to inert tracking code into your Checkout page you can navigate to Customize design > Advanced (advanced) – Checkout in your Big Cartel admin area and locate the closing body tag in the page code..

var stCountry   = '{{ store.country.name }}';
</script>
</body>
</html>

..and create space IMMEDIATELY BEFORE it for your code..

var stCountry   = '{{ store.country.name }}';
</script>

<script type="text/javascript">

..My Tracking Code..

</script>

</body>
</html>

Always test that your shop checkout works and that products can be purchased from your shop after editing your Checkout page.

Creating a new Success page

As mentioned above, your Big Cartel Success page is not securely hosted and does not provide access to order data. If you need to address one or both of these limitations, you may choose to create a new success page at your own web space. You can then set a new URL for your success page via your Checkout page custom options.

For information on using your Checkout page custom options, refer to How do I use the Custom Options for my Big Cartel theme? Once you have read this article and understand your custom option system, you will be able to confidently navigate to your Checkout page custom options and set a new success page URL. For example:

{% assign return_after_payment_link_url = 'https://my-secure-host.com/my-custom-success' %}

Creating a remotely hosted success page that is secure and/or accesses your order data requires advanced hosting and coding knowledge. You will need to contact your web host and/or a PayPal developer if assistance is required.
