How do I redirect my non-www to my www custom Big Cartel domain?

Filed in Domain

Please note that Aarcade custom domain and email services are only available with an Aarcade Domain & Email Plan.

If you have an Aarcade Domain & E-Mail for Big Cartel service this redirection has already been set up by Aarcade, and you do not need to take any further steps.

Introduction

When applying a custom domain as explained in the How do I set up a custom domain for my Big Cartel shop?, an often overlooked step, when using the root custom domain for your shop, is the redirection of the non-www domain to the www domain.

To clarify, let’s say we want our shop to be located at our custom domain www.my-domain.com. We follow Big Cartel’s support article and assign a CNAME for “www” to point to our Big Cartel shop address my-shop.bigcartel.com.

After this change has resolved, our shop can be successfully browsed at the URL:

http://www.my-domain.com

However, if we enter the non-www URL:

http://my-domain.com

We do not see our shop, but instead get an error or the default page of our web host or domain registrar.

Having the non-www domain redirect to our shop’s www domain is important, as it ensures that potential customers will find our shop regardless of whether they include the www in our address.

Setting Up The Redirect

If you need further assistance with either of the following methods, please contact your domain registrar if necessary. Aarcade can not provide support for setting up your custom domain using your domain registrar’s controls.

Using your domain tools

Some domain registrars provide controls for creating a redirect for a specific domain record. BE CAREFUL HERE not to confuse this with a blanket domain redirect, as this will override your correct CNAME domain record and/or break your non-www domain allocation.

If you are unsure how to use your domain tools or you can not locate them, please contact your domain registrar support and ask them about setting up a non-www to www domain redirect. Refer them to this article if necessary.

When contacting your domain registrar support, you must stress that you want a simple URL redirect from your non-www to your www domaindo not use a frame, do not use masking and do not use an ANAME record. The correct format is:

my-domain.com

URL Redirect (no masking)

http://www.my-domain.com

Using your web hosting

If you have web hosting with your domain and FTP access to your hosted files, you can easily create the non-www to www redirect if your server supports htaccess.

  1. Navigate to the root of your www / public HTML folder.
  2. Open the file called “.htaccess”. If it does not exist, create a new file named “.htaccess” at the root of your www / public HTML folder. Note that the file name starts with a full-stop.
  3. Paste the following code at the very beginning of the .htaccess file and save the changes.
# BEGIN non-WWW to WWW
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
# END non-WWW to WWW

If the Using your web hosting method does not work or your server does not support htaccess, please apply the Using your domain tools method.
