How should I assign the Home, Site and View All links in my menus?

Filed in Header, Footer & Menus

The following main pages are available to your Big Cartel web space:

1. Your Home Page
Your Big Cartel Home Page is the page located at the root of your Big Cartel shop, e.g. http://myshop.bigcartel.com. By default, this page will display your featured products as defined by the settings you have chosen via your Customize design > Customize admin area.
2. Your Products Page
Your Big Cartel Products Page is the page located at the /products directory of your Big Cartel shop, e.g. http://myshop.bigcartel.com/products. This page will display all of your shop products in the order and number-per-page defined by the settings you have chosen via your Customize design > Customize admin area.
3. Your Web Site (optional)
Your Web Site is your external site that you link to, e.g. your custom built web site or your blog, as detailed in the article How do I add a link from my Big Cartel shop back to my web site or blog?

Your customer can navigate to each of these main pages via the links included in your shop menus. As such, it is important to consider how you wish to use each of these main pages in your web space and then label and locate each link accordingly.

These menu links are referred to as “Special Menu Items” and can be edited via the {{ NAVIGATION OPTIONS }} section of your Primary Custom Options located in your Customize design > Advanced (advanced) page code (refer to How do I use the Custom Options for my Big Cartel theme?):

{% assign website_link_text = 'Back to Site' %}
{% assign website_link_location = 'pp' %}
{% assign open_website_in_new_window = 'no' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_text = 'Home' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_location = 'cp' %}
{% assign all_products_link_text = 'View All' %}
{% assign all_products_link_location = 'cp' %}

For more information on how to edit these options, refer to the related custom option note (as discussed in the above-linked custom option article).

Navigation Examples

How you label and locate your “Special Menu Items” will depend on the content of each of your main pages. To help clarify how these labels and locations may be set, please review the following examples.

Default Set Up

The default set up assumes that you will be using your Home Page as the home of your web space.

Main Page Label Location
Web Site Back to Site Start of Page Menu
Home Page Home Start of Category Menu
Products Page View All Start of Category Menu
Web Site as Home

In this example,

  • We wish to give our external web site a greater priority and identify it as the “Home” of our web space.
  • We further emphasise the priority of the web site link by moving it to the start of the category menu (before the shop home link).
  • We can not have two main pages labelled as “Home” so the obvious move is to change the shop Home Page label to “Shop”.
  • We want to reduce the priority of the Products Page by moving its link to the end of the category menu.

The above changes result in:

Main Page Label Location
Web Site Home Start of Category Menu
Home Page Shop Start of Category Menu
Products Page View All End of Category Menu

and the corresponding custom option settings would be:

{% assign website_link_text = 'Home' %}
{% assign website_link_location = 'cp' %}
{% assign open_website_in_new_window = 'no' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_text = 'Shop' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_location = 'cp' %}
{% assign all_products_link_text = 'View All' %}
{% assign all_products_link_location = 'ca' %}
Home Page Displays All Products

In this example,

  • We have set the Home Page to display all products via the {{ CONTENT OPTIONS }} section of our Home Page Custom Options located in our Customize design > Advanced (advanced) – Home page code (refer to How do I use the Custom Options for my Big Cartel theme?).
  • We want to remove the Products Page link, since our Home Page now shows all products.
  • Our web site is our blog, so we want to label it “Blog” and move it to the end of our page menu.

The above changes result in:

Main Page Label Location
Web Site Blog End of Page Menu
Home Page Home Start of Category Menu
Products Page (blank) Start of Category Menu

and the corresponding custom option settings would be:

{% assign website_link_text = 'Blog' %}
{% assign website_link_location = 'pa' %}
{% assign open_website_in_new_window = 'no' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_text = 'Home' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_location = 'cp' %}
{% assign all_products_link_text = '' %}
{% assign all_products_link_location = 'cp' %}
Home Page as an Enter (a.k.a. Splash or Landing) Page

In this example,

  • We have set the Home Page to display only a single “Enter Site” image that links to our Products Page, without displaying any menus or headers, by following the instructions of How do I create a custom home page for my Big Cartel shop?
  • Once the customer has entered the site, we do not want them to return to the “Enter Site” image at the Home Page, so we remove the Home Page link.
  • Our Products Page now acts as the Home page of our web space, so we label it “Home” accordingly.
  • Our web site is a portfolio of our art work that does not link back to our shop. We therefore want it to open in a new window, so that customers do not navigate away from our shop with no clear way to return.

The above changes result in:

Main Page Label Location
Web Site Portfolio Start of Page Menu
Home Page (blank) Start of Category Menu
Products Page Home Start of Category Menu

and the corresponding custom option settings would be:

{% assign website_link_text = 'Portfolio' %}
{% assign website_link_location = 'pa' %}
{% assign open_website_in_new_window = 'yes' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_text = '' %}
{% assign shop_home_link_location = 'cp' %}
{% assign all_products_link_text = 'Home' %}
{% assign all_products_link_location = 'cp' %}

Shop Header Link

Depending upon your “Special Menu Items” settings, you may also wish to consider the link assigned to your shop header text or image. By default, clicking the shop header text or image, will take your customer to the Home Page.

In some cases, like the above “Home Page as an Enter (or Splash) Page” example, you may wish to have the header link to your Web Site, Products Page or another page.

The Shop Header Link can be edited via the {{ HEADER OPTIONS }} section of your Primary Custom Options located in your Customize design > Advanced (advanced) – Layout page code (refer to How do I use the Custom Options for my Big Cartel theme?).

For example, to change the header link to your View All page you can use the relative URL ‘/products’:

{% assign alternative_header_link_url = '/products' %}
